Amanda Holden heads a phenomenal cast in this wonderfully funny and heart-warming comedy which charts the lives of seven women and one man attempting to tap their troubles away at a weekly dancing class. Initially all thumbs and left feet, the group is just getting to grip with the basics when they are asked to take part in a charity gala… Over the course of several months we meet the group, and all of them have a story to tell, There’s haughty Vera, mouthy Maxine and uptight Andy; bubbly Sylvia and shy Dorothy; eager Lynne and cheerful Rose and, of course, Geoffrey. At the piano is the dour Mrs Fraser and spurring them all on, the ever-patient Mavis. Directed by triple Olivier Award winner Maria Friedman, the stellar cast also includes Tracy-Ann Oberman, Anna-Jane Casey, and Nicola Stephenson. Stepping Out was the winner of the Evening Standard Comedy of the Year Award, 1984. It was also made into a musical, which became a film in 1991, starring Liza Minnelli and Julie Walters.

REVIEW: Stepping Out at the Vaudeville Theatre *****
It’s rare that I don’t agree with a general critical consensus when they don’t take a fancy to a show, but Stepping Out seems to be an exception. Remarkably, I knew nothing about the play before going in other than it focuses on a group of women in a weekly tap class, but what I met was a pleasant surprise. Not only does this play feel fresh and light-hearted, but it’s complex and hilarious in equal measure, making it a West End staple.

With such a line-up of strong women in this female dominated show, Stepping Out has all the hallmarks of a great night out at the Vaudeville.

REVIEW: Stepping Out ". . . audiences will not be disappointed"
Tits and teeth is the name of the game at the Vaudeville Theatre. Put on your best smile and face front. That is the lesson given to Mavis’s hapless tap class and it becomes clear that the characters adopt this in their lives, using the class as a means of escape.
