Based on an amazing true story, I Am My Own Wife explores the astonishing life of Charlotte von Mahlsdorf, a transvestite and celebrated antiques dealer, who successfully and defiantly navigated the two most oppressive regimes of the past century - the Nazis and the Communists.
As Charlotte, Jefferson Mays has received universal critical acclaim, as he morphs seamlessly between Charlotte and each of the play's 34 other characters. In addition to a Tony Award, his performance has earned him a Drama Desk Award, an Obie Award, a Lucille Lortel Award,a Theatre World Award and a Drama League Award.
This compelling drama follows the journey playwright Doug Wright made from New York to Berlin to interview Charlotte who was hailed as a cultural hero of her time. Von Mahlsdorf's colourful tales are a veritable treasure chest of intrigue.
'An amazing theatrical experience' - New York Post
