Following a sell out run at the Royal Court Theatre, the universally acclaimed production of Martin McDonagh’s first UK play in over 10 years transfers to Wyndham’s Theatre for a strictly limited season.
In his small pub in Oldham, Harry is something of a local celebrity. But what’s the second-best hangman in England to do on the day they’ve abolished hanging? Amongst the cub reporters and sycophantic pub regulars, dying to hear Harry’s reaction to the news, a peculiar stranger lurks, with a very different motive for his visit.
Martin’s McDonagh’s theatre credits include The Beauty Queen of Leenane (the Royal Court), The Cripple of Inishmaan (National/West End/Broadway), The Pillowman (National/ Broadway), The Lieutenant of Inishmore (RSC/Garrick/Broadway) and A Behanding in Spokane (Broadway). For film (as Writer/Director) credits include Six Shooter (Short), In Bruges and Seven Psychopaths. Martin has been awarded the Olivier Award for Best New Comedy (The Lieutenant of Inishmore), an Olivier Award for Best New Play (The Pillowman), an Academy Award for Best Live Action Short Film (Six Shooter) and a BAFTA for Best Original Screenplay (In Bruges).
Matthew Dunster directs as original cast members David Morrissey and Johnny Flynn reprise their roles.

Matthew Dunster’s credits for the Royal Court include Liberian Girl. Special notes
03/03 performance: Please note earlier performance start time of 7pm. Ticket holders should be in their seats by 6.45pm. Latecomers will not be admitted. This is a studio performance. There will be several cameras in the auditorium and views of the stage may be blocked at any time during the performance.

Dark Comedy At Its Finest: HANGMEN At Wyndham’s Theatre
When hype surrounds a show as much as hype has surrounded the Royal Court’s new play HANGMEN, I start to worry – will the show live up to the standards that I’ve heard about it? With a play like this one, which at its heart is very much focused upon the kind of humour that you’re interested in, each person’s opinion differs. Luckily, when I went to go and see the second preview of this play’s West End transfer at Wyndham’s Theatre the other week, I was far from disappointed.

Review: Hangmen Is 'Refreshingly Original And Flawlessly Executed'
Hangmen at Wyndham's Theatre until 5th March next year, is a refreshingly original and flawlessly executed play. It is set in 1965, just after the abolition of capital punishment in Britain. The play's protagonist, Harry, finds himself out of his job as a hangman – and what's a hangman to do when hanging is abolished? In this production, highly strung moments are balanced perfectly with a lot of on-edge comedy, none of which are too tongue-in-cheek or at all ropey (unlike these puns).
Engaging from start to finish, Hangmen is a play that I would highly recommend to anybody looking to see a sophisticated, humorous and entirely unique piece of theatre.

Does Hangmen Live Up To The Hype?
Hanging has never been so hilarious.
Martin McDonagh’s new play, Hangmen, which just transferred to Wyndham’s Theatre after a sell-out run at the Royal Court, is a unique combination of deliciously tense and laugh out loud funny. It’s 1965, hanging’s just been abolished and Harry Wade, pub landlord and Britain’s second best hangman, has plenty to say on the subject.

When it was suggested to me that I go and see Hangmen, a play, I was quite surprised. I've been brought up around West End musicals so it seemed like an alien idea to me, but nevertheless, I decided to go along and watch my first professional play.
