I AM EMILIA.
Writer. Wife. Lover. Mother. Muse.
I am unheard.
I want education, equality, opportunity, respect. For us all.
We want choice.
We want a voice.
2019
WE ARE EMILIA.
400 years ago Emilia Bassano wanted her voice to be heard. It wasn’t. Her story is still our story.
Emilia and her sisters reach out to us across the centuries with passion, fury, laughter and song. Listen to them. Let them inspire and unite us.
Times are finally changing. Not fast enough. It’s up to you. We are all Emilia.
Stand up alongside her and be counted.

Emilia The Play to close two weeks early at the West End's Vaudeville Theatre

Despite rave reviews for Morgan Lloyd Malcolm's Emilia play, the acclaimed transfer from Shakespeare's Globe will be ending its Vaudeville Theatre run on Saturday, 1 June 2019. The Shakespearean what-if play, which tells the tale of the Victorian playwright's rumoured muse Emilia Bassano and features themes of female empowerment, was originally meant to close on 15 June 2019. Die-hard Shakespeare fans and London theatre completionists hoping to catch a glimpse of The Dark Lady onstage should book their Emilia tickets now to secure the best seats and prices.

London Theatre Review: Emilia at London's Vaudeville Theatre

Who was Emilia? Who or what does she represent? Was Emilia a sixteenth-century proto-feminist? Was Emilia ‘The Dark Lady’  in some of Shakespeare's sonnets? What is undisputed is that Emilia Lanier née Bossano was a highly intelligent and erudite woman who challenged the prevailing male hierarchy by publishing the first book of poems by an Englishwoman. As we are informed by one of the Emilias in the play, women were only permitted to write about religious matters, therefore on the face, her poetry reflected Christian orthodoxy.  However, as illustrated in the play, it also provided a commentary on the position of women in society.
